Lizz wrote out a great question and opinion on the immigration issue. Since, oddly enough it seems to be the only thing to get people upset/motivated in thes country, figured i should write on it.
The issue I'm getting isn't weather or not illigale immagration is "good and bad." Its how the problem is treated. Do you grant amnesty to everyone? Do you build a giant wall along the border? Do you issue everyone work visas?etc.
Economicaly speaking, illegale immagration has played an important role within the economy. Cheap labor = higher profits. The sudden end to illeagle immagration puts some states into huge economic problems. However, Illeages do take advantage of social programs that they do not pay for.
Another problem overlooked.. is the status of the countries the illeages come from. Mexico, for example, has an extreemly high unemployment rate. This is why immagrints come to America, for work. If all illiales went back to countries of origian, the infrastructure of those countires could conciveably collapse with such a large number of unemployed. Mexico is already on shakey ground, if that government falls...well.. if you think immigration is a problem NOW.. see what happins then.
The "They do jobs we won't" argument is meaning, "they do jobs we won't take 4 dollers an hour for." Nor would we accept minamum wage for it. Again, the solution for non crazy liberals lies withing legale immagration and work visas. The application process is overly diffacult. Not that the backround checks and such are not nessicary, but there is a lot of buerocracy that gets cought up in both those, which encourages more illiagle immagration.
Personally, and from a couple friends here who have their green cards, their main issue is, treating illiage immagrants as felons is wrong. These are what the millions of people (who are overwhelmingly LEGALE immagrants) are protesting.
I can not condem an action i know I would personally undertake. If I lived in an area that was impoverished, living under a courrupt government who treats opositon as trators and has them exacuted, and where the people who are to "serve and protect" are the ones commiting the majority of the crimes... you'd sure as hell see me do anything and everything to get the hell out of there and to a place where i can make a somewhat decent wage. These people are not felons. Do they break a law? Yes. Should they be deported when found out? Yes.
Like i said, I will not condem people for doing what i would do.
However... an open border, or as it sits now, is unacceptable. Middle ground needs to be reached in this, and choosing an extreem hinders both the economic back bone and moral concious of the country.
